Family Life: Her parents are Alice Joan, a lawyer and nuclear disarmament peace activist based in New York, and Gerald Slater, a television executive. They divorced in 1974. Slater married award-winning editor Robert Watzke in 1990, and the two have a daughter, Hannah Nika, who was born in 1995.
Info: Slater's first acting experience was alongside James Earl Jones, Meg Ryan, and Matthew Modine in the 1982 ABC Afterschool Special Amy and the Angel. Her career took off when she was cast as the title character in the film Supergirl, released in 1984. She received praise for her leading role as the female superhero. The next year, she starred as Billie Jean Davy, a modern day Joan of Arc, in the cult classic The Legend of Billie Jean. She followed this hit performance with roles in two big comic blockbusters,
Ruthless People (1986) and The Secret of My Succe$s (1987).
Slater co-founded the New York theater group, The Naked Angels, with Gina Gershon. She has appeared on stage in Grease, and Shakespeare and Friends. Slater has also pursued a musical career throughout the years. She sang a medley of Broadway songs as well other songs in the 1989 movie Happy Together, and also sang in the 1994 movie Lassie. Her voice
can also be heard on the soundtrack of the film Nowhere in Sight (2000). In 2003, she released a CD, One of These Days, consisting of her original songs.

"Smallville". As a result, she had a recurring role as Superman's biological mother, Lara Lor-Van, on the Superman-themed TV series. She has also written music and lyrics for an urban opera, "The Ugly Duckling," which has been presented in workshop form.
Her third album, "Shine", was released in late 2010.
